Counsellors
If you are a counsellor and interested in how you may be able to help Forgotten Australians in your area, please feel free to contact us and speak with our senior counsellor. All counsellors providing services to Forgotten Australians through Open Place are screened and supported to provide the best possible service to Forgotten Australians. Relationships Australia (Victoria), as a partner in Open Place, has developed Guidelines for Counsellors referring someone to Open Place. If you are working with someone who you know is a Forgotten Australian, please encourage them to contact us and speak to the worker on duty. Alternatively, we would be happy to discuss with professionals the needs of Forgotten Australians and could arrange an outreach visit to support the introduction of a new worker and provide information about Open Place.
Required reading for professionals
For comprehensive information about Forgotten Australians it is recommended that interested persons read the Senate Committee Report known as Forgotten Australians dated August 2004 and the subsequent report Lost Innocents and Forgotten Australians revisited dated June 2009. The Alliance for Forgotten Australians [AFA] has produced a booklet “Forgotten Australians: Supporting survivors of childhood institutional care in Australia” that is designed to inform and assist professionals and others to understand the impact of the trauma experienced by those who spent their childhood in orphanages and institutions. The full text can be found at www.forgottenaustralians.org.au
