Royal Commission Final Report

In November 2012 Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced there would be a Royal Commission held into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. By March 2013 the Royal Commissions Act was amended to allow for ‘private sessions’, with the first private session held in May 2013. More than 8,000 private sessions were held during the course of the Commission.

By April 2013 the first of 57 public hearings was held at the County Court in Melbourne. The Royal Commission held its final public hearing on the 14th December 2017, and handed down its final report to the Federal Government the following day, the 15th December 2017.

The Royal Commission made a series of recommendations in its final report. Implementing these recommendations is the responsibility of governments and institutions across Australia.

Many Forgotten Australians provided their accounts in private sessions (around 2,500 according to the Commission’s data) and many more gave evidence or provided support with their presence at public hearings.
